June 2008
Unit members, asked how they wanted to mark their Unit's 75th anniversary, decided on a social evening, exclusively for them, Unit Honorary Members and partners, in mufti and without ceremony.
Thus, on the actual birth date, June 22nd, the members gathered at St Marks Church Hall in Remuera to celebrate the Unit's birthday. After a few words from Chief Fire Officer, Jim Smith, the evening progressed without further speeches or ceremony. The organised entertainment - comedians playing out hilarious sketches - preceded supper, and then there were more refreshments from the bar to conclude a most enjoyable evening.
August
Unit members attended a meeting of the NZ Ex-Firefighters' Association to thank them for the part they played, 75 years before, when members of the Fire Brigade Old Boys' Association (as they were then known), volunteered their services as foundation members of the Auckland Fire Police.
September
The Unit had a group photo taken, appropriately in its special year.
The Unit's 75th Annual Meeting was held. Full details can be seen here but the main points were:
- Attendance of special guests who have links to the Unit's beginnings
- Chief Fire Officer's Report for the 75th year
- Appointment of the Unit's first Patron
- Minutes read of the first meeting held in 1933
- New member took the Oath, reflecting the responsibility all Fire Police hold
- Presentation of gift from Montgomery County Fire Police, USA
- Supper and cutting of the birthday cake
October
The Unit has 3 of its members serving in executive positions at national, provincial and district levels in fire brigade organisations. Chief Fire Officer Jim Smith is elected as President of the Auckland Districts Fire Brigades' Sub Association, Fire Police Constable Russell Allen is President of the Auckland Provincial Fire Brigades' Association while Station Officer Ric Carlyon is an appointed member on the Board of Directors of the United Fire Brigades' Association. It's appropriate this unique line-up has occurred in the Unit's special year: it's unlikely to be repeated.
November
Replacement and overhaul of the Unit's own radio communication system is well underway with the issue of the first tranche of new hand-held radios. Led by Chief Jim Smith, this upgrade begins an updating project which ultimately will upgrade all members' radios. And transmission sites, too, have been improved and future-proofed, to ensure members can readily communicate with each other right across Auckland, a sprawling metropolis that expands every week.
March
Special 75th Anniversary pages added to the Unit's website
Honours Evening where three Unit members are due to receive their 25 Year Gold Star. Other members will also receive service honours and there will be a special ceremony, part of the 75th anniversary celebrations, to acknowledge and thank the employers of our members, including those who are self-employed, who generously give to the Unit.
June
75th Anniversary activities end.
