| Celebrating our 75 years of Service |
From the Chief Fire Officer,
Auckland Volunteer Fire Police Unit.
|
It's a pleasure to welcome visitors to this part of the Unit's web-pages, particularly so because this supplement celebrates 75 years' service by our members, past and present, to our community.
The period since Fire Police began in Auckland in 1933 has, as anyone would expect, seen many changes. A World War intervened, air travel came of age, TV came along and Auckland began its sprawl towards a metropolis. In the Fire Service, to name just a few, light alloy metals replaced heavy waterway gear, enclosed fire appliances became the norm, 'brassies' were phased out in favour of more comfortable, safer helmets and communications were revolutionised with the 111 system and modern radio equipment.
These changes all had a marked effect on Fire Police activities in Auckland, and, of course, they continue. It's called progress.
The one unbroken thread, unaltered over the 75 years by all these changes has been the willingness of the Unit's members to serve, a sentiment shared by the first 12 men who signed up in June 1933, continued by all those members in the intervening years and held as strong as ever by those who belong today.
So I am pleased to introduce these special "75th" pages on our web-site and hope you will share our history and the activities of those who serve, or have served, in the Unit. They're the ones to thank for the voluntary time and effort contributed to the community over 75 years which allows us to mark the event with pride and confidence towards the future.
