Recruitment
Suitable recruits are always welcomed, especially from areas in Greater Auckland where the Unit is a bit thin on the ground. Candidates must have a clean police record and preferably some experience in the Fire Service. They must have reliable transport and be prepared to respond, when available, at all times of the day and night.

Once accepted, recruits are sworn in as Constables, issued with a full set of protective gear (a distinctive blue helmet, in place of the firefighters' yellow helmet), a dress uniform, pager and radio and serve a six month probationary period. They also start the training programme, with sessions usually held on Monday evenings other than meeting nights, with additional exercises sometimes held at weekends. Members must be available to attend the Unit's monthly meetings at District Headquarters, rear of City Fire Station, Pitt Street, held on the third Monday evening in each month.

Members are eligible for service honours from the United Fire Brigades' Association and Long Service and Good Conduct Medals.
